So far, up to 14,000 students in the district have tak

n skating and skiing lessons, said Zheng Shiyong, deputy director of Yanqing district’s education commission.

“We will continue supporting and encouraging more people to participate in winter

sports,” he said, adding that around 17,000 students will experience winter activities by the end of this year.

Some professional winter sports activities have also been designed into the distr

ict’s education plans, with more professional instruction to students, according to Zheng.

The district’s education authorities also cooperated with its sports bu

reau to make winter ice and snow sports available to all residents in the area.

“We will have 110,000 people participating in winter ice and snow acti

vities by 2022 in Yanqing,” said Ma Zhiyong, deputy director of the sports bureau.

While it is reasonable to assume that women most concern

d with their body shape are those who might be susceptible to obesity or other risks, studies indicate the vast majority of wo

men who engage in “fat talk” can be ranked “average” and “healthy” when it comes to their weight.

Zhang Ran, 28, a senior consultant in the Beijing office of multinational professio

nal services company Ernst & Young, said she was a “fat talker” when she was a college student.

“I felt comfortable when I discovered I was not the only one who was un

happy about my body shape. But then I began to understand that it has nothing to do

with a woman’s actual weight, but everything to do with how she sees herself,” she said.

She added that sharing her fear of being fat with others could trigger feelings of emotional security and being part of a great

er community. Even after she graduated and started a career, “fat talk”-and its related effects-did not stop.

US soy farmers call for cool-down of trade tensions

US soy farmers have urged Washington to work for a positive solution to the current tarif

f dispute with the world’s top oilseed buyer China, and avoid further escalation of trade tensions.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the American Soybean Association (ASA) described the t

hreat by US President Donald Trump’s administration to increase the tariff rate from 10 percent to 25 p

ercent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods as the “worst case” for US soybean growers.

“This is a predicament for soy growers,” said Davie Stephens, ASA president and a soybean farmer from Kentucky.

“With depressed (soybean) prices and unsold stocks fo

recast to double before the 2019 harvest begins in September, we nee

d the China market reopened to US soybean exports within weeks, not months or longer,” he added.

Xing Ziqiang, chief economist with investment bank Mo

organ Stanley China, said this age group will be a main driver of the consumption upgrade in the next decade, with consum

ption in third- and fourth-tier cities expected to reach 45 trillion yuan in 2030, compared with 15 trillion yuan in 2017.

There were estimated to be about 112 million small-town youths in

China last year, according to mobile internet industry consultancy iiMedia Research.

Chen Ke, a senior partner with global consultancy Roland Berger, said that with lower housing prices in third- and fourth-tier c

ities, small-town youths have sizable disposable income and are more willing to spend a larger proportion of th

eir income on daily consumption, compared with people of the same ages living in bigger cities.

“They also have an increasing desire to live a better material and spir

itual life, are becoming more interested in personal products and are more willing to sp

end on entertainment and hobbies, as they have more spare time than their peers in big cities,” he said.

Democrats have said they may issue a subpoena to

try to force Barr to testify before their committee.

“The failure of Attorney General Barr to come to the hearing today is sim

ply another step in the administration’s growing attack on American democracy an

d its attack on the right of Congress” as a co-equal branch of government, Nadler said.

Barr spent four hours before a Republican-led Senate committee on Wednesday defen

ding his handling of Mueller’s report on Russia’s interference in the election to boost Trump’s ca

ndidacy and whether the president subsequently tried to obstruct Mueller’s probe.

Representative Doug Collins, the House Judiciary Committee’s top Republican, s

aid Barr did not appear before that panel because Nadler had insisted on an aggr

Restoring a feature-length film by hand can easily tak

e months, if not up to half a year. Hong Kong film director Peter Ho-sun Chan once said the image restoration of his most a

cclaimed work Comrades: Almost a Love Story cost 1.5 million yuan ($224,000), excluding the expenses for restoring the soundtrack.

Faced with hundreds old TV series to restore, Youku was naturally reluctant to throw such a huge sum of money at every project. Their

technicians then turned to artificial intelligence to develop programs that could automatically enhance the tapes.

“If a lengthy manual frame-by-frame restoration might be able to achieve a full score of 10, at least we could turn an ‘unw

atchable’ series into one that achieves a score of 7 to 8 points within a shorter period of time using mass digital techn

iques,” says Jiang Wenfei, a leading technician and head of Youku’s 30-member restoration team.

He estimates that a single episode takes one working day to restore using traditional methods.

Pei explains that correcting the color cast is the most common problem they have to fix. “People’

s faces sometimes look like they are covered by dirt (on film), and their black hair turns green or blue.”

Ma described the early radiation as carpet bombing, sayin

g it causes collateral damage in the area around the tumor. A “satellite map” is needed for a precision strike, he said.

Ma and his team put forward an individualized irradiation range and dose standard for radi

otherapy. The result is a clear picture showing high – and low-risk areas, which then allows dose stratification.

In 2014, an atlas of organs at risk in nasopharyngeal cancer patients was published in

Radiotherapy and Oncology. It suggested tailoring both radiation doses and targets, and setting a reco

mmended safety dose for protecting 33 normal organs around the nasopharynx.

Today, the five-year overall survival rate for patients exceeds 80 percent at Sun Yat-sen Uni

versity Cancer Center, while the rate of severe side effects from radiotherapy has dropped by 24 percent.

Ma, who has won China’s National Science and Technology Award twice with his team, is grateful to more than 10,000

patients who have participated in his research, saying their courage is behind the progress in the treatment.
