Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, told the Nikkei Asian Review on Satu

rday that the company has not done anything that violates the law, and the ban will have a limited impact on its business.

However, Xiang Ligang, director-general of the telecom industry association Informat

The move fully demonstrates Beijing’s firm determinati

on to defend its due interests and legitimate rights in international trade and economic cooperation, according to analysts.

The US has totally ignored the fact that China has been eager to resolve trade and economic issues through high-level official ta

lks and pledged to further expand market access for global businesses, said Liang Ming, a senior resea

rcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.

China has emphasized that the US should not use the tariff method. That is not just for China’s benefit; it is the rational choice a

ny country would make when facing unreasonable requests in trade, said Dong Yan, director of the inte

rnational trade office at the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Liu said that at the level of trade representatives, both side

both sides have the sincerity to solve the existing problems.

“The purpose decides everything,” Liu said, in English. “China wants a very equal and dignif

ied deal, and under this premise, a good, cooperative deal,” he said. “I hope our US colleagues would understand this.”

Liu said he believed both sides have a strong desire to reach a deal. “We need to work hard tog

ether to surpass the temporary difficult period of time, and then we’ll have a bright future,” he said.

Asked by China Daily how China and the US could help world economic growth, whose p

rospects have been already compromised by the escalation of trade tensions between the two countries, Liu said co

operation serves the interests of the two sides and the whole world, while conflict hurts both.

“We have tremendous common interests and many commo

n foes, only through cooperation could we solve these problems,” Liu said.

Tax reduction is a comprehensive policy that requires gove

nment departments to enhance coordination as they implement various policies, Li said.

The premier attached great importance to such measures as reducing the rate of the value-add

ed tax, increasing the tax exemption for research costs and reforming individual income tax.

The measures should not only ease the tax burden for manufacturing

companies but also reduce taxes for construction enterprises, which provide a great nu

mber of jobs, Li said, adding that all industries should be covered by the benefits of tax cuts.

Li pledged more efforts to urge government departments and State-ow

ned enterprises to pay off their debts so that the effects of tax reduction are not diminished.

The government will take further measures to deepen reform and opening-up, encoura

ge innovation and entrepreneurship and promote fair competition, Li said, adding that co

mpanies should also seize the opportunity to promote high-quality growth.

Some community management companies have been arra

nging separate parking areas where electric bicycles can be charged at night,

and this is a good idea that should be more widely adopted.

ndustry insiders join outlandishly-dressed fans in attending this year’s colorful China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, Xu Fan reports.

It was a rainy morning, but I felt as if I had woken up in a dream world as I pee

red through the window of my Hangzhou hotel room to see hoards of costume-clad fantas

y aficionados waiting in long lines to enter the expo hall of the 15th China International Cartoon & Animation Festival.

Amid this sea of outlandishly-dressed enthusiasts-some of whom could be seen lugging suitcases filled with a diver

se array of wigs, clothes and makeup items-I could make out a Spider-Man, a Fox Spirit (a character f

rom the 2018 China-US film White Snake) and a dozen other popular fantasy figures acted out by role-playing fans.

It was April 30, the first day of the six-day annual festival, the largest and most influential of its kind in China.

It is to be hoped the fire in Guilin will make people think twice about where the

y park and charge their electric bikes, otherwise it is only a matter of time before there is another fatal fire.

In recent years, sales in many sectors in lower-tier cit

ities have grown more quickly than in big cities, including clothing, food, beverages and home appliances, Chen added.

During Spring Festival in February, small-town youths in third- an

d lower-tier cities outperformed their peers in bigger centers of population in consu

mption across major e-commerce platforms, including the number of orders placed and the range of products bought.

In third- and fourth-tier cities, total online spending during Spring Festival rose by 55 percent year-on-year, comp

ared with 51 percent in first-tier metropolises. Spending by small-town youths on beauty products rose by 7.8 perc

ent year-on-year, compared with a 5.4 percent increase among their peers in larger cities, according to a report rel

eased by Tmall-Alibaba’s e-commerce platform-and market research company Kantar Worldpanel.

Small-town youths have also boosted the movie industry. For example, in the first quarter of this year, some

56 percent of the box office for The New King of Comedy came from lower-tier cities, as did 46 percent for Crazy Alien.

Chen said most Chinese scientists and researchers foc

us on translational research that applies a new discovery from basic research and moves it along toward clinical practice.

“But I think Chinese scientists need to focus more on making innovative and new dis

coveries from basic research and develop new methods for cancer treatment from that,” he said.

China and the US are working together in many medical research areas, Chen said, citing the clinica

l practice cooperation between China and large US pharmaceutical companies, which he said is “huge now”.

“The cooperation between specialists and pharmaceutical companies in China and the US can potentially accelerate resea

rch and development of new drugs and translate laboratory findings to treat human cancers,” he said.

Chen said that there are still many other areas in which the US and China can work together.

Foreign investment in Beijing property may hit record

Foreign investors have been increasingly active in Beijing’s property market this year,

with their transactions projected to reach a record high in 2019, industry experts said.

“We see an increasing proportion of foreign investors’ participating

in Beijing’s property market this year, and we are expecting another round of brisk inves

tment this year,” said Liu Bing, deputy managing director of DTZ China’s capital market department.

“This is mainly due to the appreciation of the dollar since last year and tightening financing channels for domestic players.”

According to DTZ foreign investors have reached 10 block deals valued more than 25 billion y

uan ($3.7 billion) in Beijing’s property market from the beginning of 2018 till the first quarter of 2019.

Statistics from JLL indicate that foreign investors continue to show interest in the market this year.

And it is not just small independent record stores

that have struggled to stay afloat. In the 1990s China Record Group Co Ltd, the biggest and oldest re

cord company in the country, sold about 10 million records, such as pop, folk, and classical music by Chinese

singers and orchestras, says Hou Jun, the company’s vice-president. In the early 2000s the number dropped to no more

than 10,000 copies, and the huge change in the way music was consumed led to many Chinese record companies folding.

In the late 1990s China Record Group Co Ltd closed down its last vinyl prod

uction line because of the decline of the market for physical records. However, last year, as the

company celebrated the 110th anniversary of its founding, it launched a project to revive vinyl production. The com

pany has imported a production line from Germany that marks the start of the company’s

vinyl production, and it has set up a vinyl records factory in Shanghai that has a complete production line.
